Methodology
Risk scores are calculated by comparing the selected factors against the global distribution of shark incidents in our database. A multiplier above 1.0 indicates higher-than-average representation in the incident data; below 1.0 indicates lower representation.
Data Limitations
- Historical data may have reporting biases (some regions report more thoroughly)
- Incident counts don't account for exposure (time spent in water)
- Many incidents lack complete environmental data
- Past patterns don't guarantee future outcomes
