Description
On the afternoon of December 19, 1883, a tragic incident unfolded at Blackwall Point in the Parramatta River near Sydney, Australia. A 21-year-old man who had immigrated to the colony just ten months prior was swimming in the water near galvanised iron works when he suddenly disappeared from view. Workmen at the site noticed a patch of blood on the water's surface and immediately launched a search effort. Boats were procured and the river bottom was dragged for several hours without initial success. The water police arrived with grappling equipment and continued the search along the shoreline. Approximately four hours after the swimmer vanished, his body was recovered by a private boat crew. The examination of the deceased revealed extensive injuries consistent with a shark attack. The right side of the body, from the upper arm to the hip, had been bitten away. Additional severe lacerations appeared on the lower back and thighs, with large sections of flesh torn from these areas. The extent and nature of the injuries made the cause of death evident to authorities. Dr. Moffat from the Gladesville Lunatic Asylum examined the remains and certified the cause of death. Given the clear circumstances, officials determined that a formal coroner's inquest was unnecessary. The victim's father was reportedly en route to the colony by steamship at the time of the incident. The species of shark responsible for the attack was not identified.
