Description
On the morning of October 24, 2016, a 36-year-old male surfer was injured in an unprovoked shark encounter at Broken Head Beach, located south of Cape Byron in New South Wales, Australia. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM in waters approximately 200 metres from shore, where the surfer was positioned on his board among a group of approximately 15 other surfers waiting for waves. According to witness accounts, a shark emerged from beneath the water and made contact with the surfer's board. The impact was significant enough that the surfboard absorbed most of the force. The surfer reported seeing the shark's tail break the surface before it descended into the water. Observing the shark approximately five metres away and fearing a second approach, the surfer began paddling toward shore. A fellow surfer named Joel remained nearby to provide support during the paddling-out process. The surfer sustained minor lacerations to his left thigh. First aid was administered at the scene by Geoffrey Knapp, another surfer present. The injured man was subsequently transported to Byron Central Hospital by a friend, where his injuries were treated and he was discharged the same day. Sea conditions at the time included a surface temperature of 74°F and a high tide that had occurred several hours prior. The beach had experienced a two-week period without significant wave activity, which contributed to the large number of surfers in the water when conditions improved. The shark species involved in the incident was not identified. Following the incident, the surfer expressed opposition to proposed shark-netting programs, citing environmental concerns regarding potential harm to non-target marine species.
