Description
On December 9, 2018, at approximately 7:15 a.m., an unprovoked shark attack occurred off Nambucca Heads Main Beach near the Nambucca River entrance in New South Wales, Australia. A 36-year-old surfer was struck by an unidentified shark while in the water, sustaining five deep lacerations to his lower leg and right thigh. Witnesses reported observing the victim in the water before the shark appeared and he disappeared from view. Fellow surfers and an alert off-duty lifeguard responded immediately, assisting the victim back to rocks where he had exited the water. Recognizing the severity of the bleeding, bystanders fashioned a tourniquet from his surf leash to help control hemorrhage while awaiting emergency services. NSW Ambulance personnel arrived at the scene where paramedics administered a blood transfusion due to significant blood loss. Given the critical nature of the injuries, a rescue helicopter was deployed to transport the victim to John Hunter Hospital. The helicopter required an additional stop to acquire more blood before completing transport. The victim remained in serious but stable condition upon arrival at the hospital. Ambulance NSW Chief Inspector Brian Parsell commended the victim's composure and cooperation with medical staff throughout the emergency response. Following the incident, Surf Life Saving NSW closed Nambucca Heads Main Beach. The species of shark responsible for the attack was not identified.
