Why this is notable
This incident occurred at Étang-Salé, Réunion — a beach under a swimming prohibition and site of a prior attack (Gicquel, 2013) — and the detailed GSAF case documents specific environmental factors (black sand seafloor obscuring shark visibility, near-twilight conditions, waist-deep water) that contribute to the scientific understanding of elevated risk conditions in Réunion's ongoing shark-incident series.

Description
On the evening of February 14, 2015, a fatal shark attack occurred in the Indian Ocean waters off Étang-Salé in Réunion. At approximately 18h30, a 22-year-old woman was swimming in waist-deep water near Ravine Mula with her boyfriend when a tiger shark, estimated at 3.5 meters in length, attacked her without provocation. The shark seized the victim by the leg and attempted to drag her beneath the surface. She fought the animal until it released its grip, but sustained severe bite wounds to her calf and buttocks. Witnesses immediately brought her to shore and administered first aid while emergency services were summoned. When SDIS and EMS personnel arrived, the victim was in cardiac arrest. Despite stabilization efforts and rapid transport to the University Hospital of Saint-Pierre, she was pronounced dead in the operating room that evening. Dr. Gery Vangrevelynghe, a shark expert and physician, confirmed through autopsy that the attack involved a tiger shark. The attack occurred in particularly hazardous conditions: the beach features black sand that obscures visibility from the surface, swimming was prohibited in the area, and the incident took place during evening twilight when visibility was diminished. The same beach had been the site of a previous shark attack in 2013. Following the incident, authorities captured two tiger sharks and three bull sharks in the vicinity, though they were unable to definitively identify which animal, if any, was responsible for the attack.
