Description
On August 7, 2025, at approximately 4:30 pm, a 9-year-old surfer was riding waves at Tathra Beach in New South Wales when a shark seized the tail of his surfboard. The young surfer felt a powerful tug that briefly pulled him underwater before he resurfaced and caught sight of the animal's back. Nearby surfers, including his father, quickly assisted him in reaching the beach safely. The incident resulted in remarkably minor injuries—the surfer sustained only a scratch, a bruise, and a tear in his wetsuit, requiring no significant medical intervention. The surfboard, however, bore the brunt of the encounter, with the fin torn away and the board left in pieces. The shark species involved was not identified. Following the incident, local authorities conducted drone surveys of Tathra Beach on both the day of the encounter and the following day, but the shark was not relocated. According to the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club president, shark sightings are uncommon at this location, suggesting this was an unusual occurrence in an area typically considered safe for recreational surfing. This incident demonstrates how surfboards often serve as a buffer between sharks and surfers. The damage to equipment, rather than serious injury to the athlete, is consistent with many shark encounters where the animal investigates but does not pursue further contact.
