Description
On the morning of January 25, 1997, a shark encounter off Whitehaven Beach in Queensland's Whitsunday Islands resulted in severe injuries to a snorkeler on his honeymoon. The 27-year-old victim, an electrical engineer from Melbourne, was swimming from a chartered yacht anchored off the beach when the incident occurred between 11:00 and 11:30 AM. While other swimmers were present in the area, the victim was positioned near the boat's anchor chain when a shark estimated at 1.8 to 2.1 meters in length latched onto his legs. The shark "wrestled" with the victim, inflicting three separate bites. His right leg sustained puncture wounds, while his left leg suffered a severe 40-centimeter laceration extending to the bone. Emergency response was swift. The victim was airlifted from Whitehaven Beach to Hamilton Island, then transferred to Mackay Base Hospital. During the helicopter retrieval, Dr. Bert Sadleir, the hospital's clinical coordinator, provided emergency treatment including intravenous fluids and morphine for pain management. The victim arrived at the hospital at 13:40 with significant blood loss. Microsurgery was required to repair the extensive injuries to his lower legs. The shark species was not identified, though witnesses estimated its length at approximately 6 to 7 feet. The incident occurred under a full moon on January 24, 1997, in the Coral Sea approximately 100 meters from shore.
