Description
On February 15, 2018, at approximately 4:00 PM, a 35-year-old male from Kiama, New South Wales, was wading in waist-deep water at Surf Beach, the main surfing beach serving the local community. The man had been in the shallows with his two young children before sending them to shore and remaining in the water alone. Environmental conditions at the time included clear skies, calm seas at low tide, and notably active tuna schools chasing bait fish through the breakers. As the man walked backward in turbid "whitewashy and sandy" water, observing the tuna activity, he was struck from behind by a shark approximately 2 meters in length. The force of the impact knocked him off his feet. The man described the collision as feeling "like being hit with a sledgehammer in the leg" and compared landing on the shark to "falling on a slippery rock." The encounter lasted only two to three seconds before the shark passed beneath him and disappeared. The incident resulted in five puncture wounds to the left foot and lower leg. Species identification, based on tooth morphology visible in injury photographs showing slender forked teeth in the lower jaw and serrated teeth in the upper jaw, indicated a bull shark rather than the wobbegong species typical to the embayed beach habitat. The victim self-transported to Shellharbour Hospital for treatment. Medical evaluation including X-rays determined no fractures had occurred. The incident was classified as unprovoked, with evidence suggesting the shark may have been pursuing bait fish rather than targeting the man.
