Description
On the morning of January 22, 2021, Jerry Weisbecker, a 73-year-old certified diver from California with decades of diving experience, was snorkeling in calm waters approximately 100 to 200 yards off the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas on Maui's west shore. At 7:45 a.m., an estimated eight-foot tiger shark approached and struck the side of his left leg, knocking him sideways in the water. Weisbecker immediately looked down and saw the tiger shark beside him. When the shark approached again, he kicked it forcefully in the snout, successfully deterring the animal from a second attack. The shark withdrew and swam away. Weisbecker did not initially realize the severity of the encounter. It was only upon reaching shore with his wife, Francine, that they noticed he was bleeding. Medical examination revealed five puncture wounds to his left calf. He was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center where the wounds were sutured and he received antibiotics. Medical staff advised him to remain out of the ocean during recovery to prevent bacterial contamination. Despite the incident, Weisbecker demonstrated remarkable resilience. Just three days later on January 25, he returned to snorkeling with a protective plastic cast over his injured leg. When asked about the encounter, he reflected philosophically: 'I was in his territory; it's no big deal.' His perspective highlighted his acceptance of the inherent risks associated with ocean activities in shark habitat. The incident occurred during calm ocean conditions under a first quarter moon phase. The unprovoked nature of the encounter and Weisbecker's experienced response in defending himself against a second approach were notable factors in the relatively limited injuries sustained.
