Description
On Sunday, March 19, 2017, at approximately 6:30 pm, a 30-year-old male bodyboarder from Spain was attacked by a shark while bodyboarding at The Farm, a popular surf spot within Killalea State Park near Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. The victim was paddling with four friends when the incident occurred in the Tasman Sea. According to witness accounts, the shark—described as grey-colored and approximately 2.5 meters in length—approached from behind the bodyboarder. The shark attempted to grab the victim, with its tail thrashing against him as it pushed itself toward him. The bodyboarder was positioned lying down on his board with his feet in the water, leaving him vulnerable to the attack from below. The victim attempted to defend himself by striking the shark, which continued to swim in the area, causing further disturbance. Witnesses observed the tail splashing around as the incident unfolded. The attack resulted in minor injuries, including several small puncture wounds on the victim's lower body where the shark had attempted to bite. Tooth marks spanning 30 to 40 centimeters were visible on the victim's wetsuit, documenting the shark's bite attempt. Environmental conditions at the time included a sea surface temperature of 71°F, a southeast swell, and notably dirty water conditions. The moon was in a waning gibbous phase at 65% illumination. The shark species was not definitively identified. This incident was classified as unprovoked, and the victim's injuries were minor, requiring no serious medical intervention.
