Description
On the morning of April 8, 2008, a tragic shark attack occurred at Lighthouse Beach in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia. A 16-year-old male from Wollongbar was bodyboarding with a friend at the southern end of the beach, near the North Wall breakwater at the mouth of the Richmond River—a location known as a feeding area for sharks. Conditions that morning were conducive to reduced visibility. Heavy rain the previous day had created murky, dirty water, and strong southerly winds persisted throughout the incident. At approximately 08h05, the victim's friend, Brock Matthew, heard him call out and witnessed a large dark shadow moving away from the water. Upon reaching his friend, Matthew found the water beginning to turn red and discovered the victim was severely injured. Matthew immediately assisted his friend back to shore, a significant effort given the severity of the injuries. The victim sustained two large bites to his upper and lower leg, resulting in severe hemorrhaging. Emergency services, including multiple ambulance crews and a helicopter, responded to the scene by approximately 08h15, but the teenager was pronounced dead shortly after. The massive blood loss from the attack proved fatal. While the exact species was not definitively confirmed at the time, evidence and environmental factors—including recent sightings of bull sharks in the Richmond River and typical behavior patterns—suggested a bull shark was responsible. The incident led to the closure of local beaches in the Ballina area. Matthew's bravery in attempting the rescue earned him recognition from the Royal Lifesaving Society for his heroic efforts to save his friend.
