Description
On the afternoon of February 20, 1968, a 14-year-old girl was participating in a training swim with a group of children near the Belmont Swimming Club in the Swan River, Western Australia. The group had ventured approximately 100 feet from shore when the incident occurred. Without warning, the young swimmer was bitten by a shark, sustaining a severe laceration to her right thigh. A seven-inch piece of flesh was removed from the wound. Although she did not see the attacking animal, she immediately screamed, alerting nearby workmen from a construction site who rushed to assist. Despite her injury, the girl managed to swim to the riverbank herself, demonstrating remarkable composure under traumatic circumstances. She was promptly transported to the Royal Perth Hospital for medical treatment. The bite was classified as unprovoked, as the swimmer had done nothing to initiate the encounter. The species of shark responsible was not identified. This incident occurred within a broader context of shark activity in Western Australian waters. The same year, a fatal attack had claimed the life of a spearfisherman, and historical records indicated other attacks had occurred in the region. The Swan River itself had experienced one previous fatal shark attack in 1923, making this incident part of a documented history of shark encounters in the waterway.
